Tweetz 2.0 Beta »
Some quick fixes.
- Character encoding fixed. Diacriticals should post correctly now.
- Changed header font
- Added a border around the gadget
I need to know if the new tweet notification workflow is working for you. The intended behavior is to display the “new tweets” notice. It should not scroll to the top when the notification displays. Clicking the “x new tweets” notification scrolls to the top and displays the new tweets. I’ve checked this several ways and believe it’s working. If it’s not working for you or you think it should function differently, let me know.
Rounded borders. I’m not holding out too much hope for this one. Inserting a background image with transparency kills the performance of the application. It’s something you have to see to believe. The gadget literally gets twice as slow scrolling. I can only surmise that it’s a bug in the sidebar code. Lots of gadgets don’t scroll so it’s not an issue but tweetz’s performance in this area is important.
I’m still not satisfied with the long term performance of the gadget. Performance still degrades over time albeit more slowly. The issue is the DOM. The larger it gets, the slower it goes. I’m thinking of rendering only the top 25 tweets on a refresh with a “more” link to continue. All the received tweets are in the memory model so updates for additional content will be fast.
Couple of quick tips: Ctrl+S will bring up the message window when the gadget has the input focus. Ctrl+S will send a new tweet. Ctrl+K will shorten links. If you hover over the message window buttons, you’ll get tooltips showing the keyboard shortcuts.
That’s all for now. Available on the downloads page.

Thanks of the update. Now I can post in Thai again.
I prefer that the new tweets just load instead of only notification though. That way I can use Aero Peak to read the new tweet without switching to the gadgets (this is the reason I prefer gadgets over normal twiiter client in the first place). I would request an option for the old way, or make it load the new tweet in a period of time (but longer that checking for updates period).

Nice tweaks, especially the font!
I like the new model with the "new tweet" panel, which works well. But I can see that it would be good to have an option to "autorefresh".
I still prefer a standard rounded panel, but if it that means a performance hit, forget it. Square is good.
On readability, here at least the text is grey (gray) rather than white.
It would be nice to have some indication that I have already looked at messages by scrolling down. Maybe hitting the "new tweets" button could throw up new messages in a different colour, perhaps white rather than gray.

I totally agree with you on the rounded borders. I'm not out of ideas just yet. I'm probably going to ditch the scrolling DIV since it performs so poorly and just do my own scroll view. That will take some time. I whipped out 30 new backgrounds last night (minimizes stretching) so I'm highly motivated to get them in.
It's not your imagination, the text really is gray. I have one of those newer LED back-light monitors and white is bright. Haven't tried white with better font (thinner) font. I'll change it and see how it plays.
The divider bar of the last new tweet is a bit brighter than the others. Probably too subtle but that was my plan to indicate the new tweet boundary.

Hypernova - Auto refresh. See my new post about "new tweets". I think that should get what you want.
